More than the Baby Blues…

There are misconceptions about postpartum depression — particularly with what we have come to understand as simply the “baby blues“.  This commonly used phrase can oversimplify and obscure what can be a complex, debilitating and overwhelming state (which includes severe anxiety) for many women after giving birth.  As a therapist and counsellor, I see part of the problem being that many people are inadequately informed. That can lead to denial, minimization or confusion about symptoms associated with postpartum depression and which can act as barriers to getting much needed help. This Huffington Post blogger shares her personal experience with postpartum which includes severe anxiety and fear, and illustrates the need for more education around the various signs and symptoms — many of which are not at all about baby blues.
