Why First Responders Can’t “Just Switch Off” After Work

You’ve likely heard it before:

“Just leave work at work.”

But for many first responders and other trauma exposed professionals, that’s not necessarily how it works.

Your nervous system doesn’t operate on a switch.

Your System Is Still Activated

After repeated exposure to high-intensity situations, our bodies adapt by staying alert.

This can show up as:

  • Difficulty relaxing
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Irritability or hyper-awareness
  • Replaying events after shifts

This isn’t a failure to cope.

It’s your system trying to protect you.

Why It Follows You Home

When experiences aren’t fully processed, they don’t necessarily get “filed away.”

They may remain active.

And without support, they can accumulate.

Therapy Can Help You Shift Out of Survival Mode

Using approaches like EMDR, PE (prolonged exposure) and parts work, therapy can help your system:

  • Process what it’s been holding
  • Reduce intensity of reactions
  • Restore a sense of balance

If your work is following you home, it may be time for support.  You don’t have to do this alone.

I offer free consultations, with in-person therapy in Hamilton and online across Ontario using EMDR, Progressive Exposure (PE coming shortly), and other trauma therapies.  I work with first responders and other trauma exposed professionals who hold it together day after day for others.
